This Arlington Heights client wanted to bring their home up-to-date by turning three separate rooms into one open floor plan. This required our designer to creatively reassign the original rooms. After opening a few walls, touching up the floors, installing recessed can lighting, adding a kitchen peninsula, and playing room swap, this compartmentalized space flowed beautifully into the 21st Century. Our team created a spacious and bright home, with only a few adjustments.
The client wanted to stay true to the architecture, which meant our designer didn’t have to provide many materials, just provide a few updates and some drywall. The main update was the flooring. Working with the original wood floors, our team patched the spots where walls were removed and re-stained the floors to a warm brown. In the kitchen, our designer added a peninsula where the wall originally stood with a quartz countertop that spoke to the original granite counters in the rest of the space. Lastly, the staircase needed a few touches, so we replaced the spindles with square ones to give it a cleaner, more modern look and redid the tread on the stairs that were impacted by the wall removal.
Before: A closed-off living room with grey walls, there is a doorway into the kitchen. There is a small entertainment center with a flat-screen TV. The room is lit only by a small table lamp.
After: The wall separating the kitchen living area is removed, and a grey peninsula with a quartz countertop is in its place. Hardwood floors are installed through the first floor to create a warm and cohesive feel. The couch and TV have been replaced by a large dining room table and bar stools at the peninsula. There are two hanging pendant lights above the peninsula and a black chandelier above the dining table.
Before: There is a beige on the right of the staircase. The stairs are a light oak with patterned floor mats on each step. There are white round spindles with a grey railing.
After: The wall on the right of the staircase has been removed, opening the hall into the living room. The top of the stairs are stained a dark brown, and their bases are painted white. The spindles have been changed to white squares, and there is a railing on the right side now.
