This growing Palatine family reached out to OHi to help bring their vision for their new home to life. Knowing they wanted an open concept layout, these clients requested that our designer rearrange the layout and allow for the gorgeous bay window to act as a focal point. Not only does the finished product have incredible natural light, but it balances trendiness with timelessness to achieve a space that feels like home.
During their construction, these homeowners decided they wanted to add a bar in their family room to create a space welcoming to guests. Not only does it create a center for snacks and beverages, but it also helps improve the storage of their family room. Making this decision, however, also lead the family to make a few compromises in their kitchen design. For example, they reallocated funds that were going towards base drawers and pullout accessories to help cover part of the investment they were making for the bar.
Before: The kitchen was a closed-off room located in the Southeast corner of the first floor. The cabinets were dated, and the upper cabinet storage was minimal due to existing soffits. The gorgeous bay window was strictly confined to the kitchen. There was no ventilation above the range and the countertop space was extremely limited. The tile flooring marked a clear separation from the rest of the first floor.
After: The kitchen is relocated to the Northeast corner of the first floor, and any walls enclosing the space are removed, creating an open concept floor plan. A custom ventilation hood is installed above the range. A large island is added, providing ample countertop space. The storage options are also increased with the addition of the island and removal of the soffits.
Before: The first floor was disjointed due to the kitchen being enclosed by two walls. There was limited natural light, making the space feel cramped. The flooring was not to the liking of our clients and it had a waxy sheen that overwhelmed the entire space.
After: Relocating the kitchen to the original dining room area and removing all interior walls created an entirely open floor plan. This allows the natural light from the stunning bay window to flood the space, helping it feel larger and brighter. The flooring is replaced with oak hardwood floors throughout, creating a seamless appearance.
Before: There was an area of dead space in their original family room where a table resided against the wall. The floor in the family room and on the stairway was all carpet.
After: A sumptuous bar now fills the space expanding from the wall to the staircase in the back of the family room. Perfect for hosting, this quartz topped bar now offers a convenient food and drink prep station, while also increasing storage. The bar is also equipped with a beverage cooler to provide easy access to drinks. To create a feeling of cohesion, LVT in a similar stain is installed to match the hardwood floors on the main level.
