Recently retired, these Arlington Heights homeowners wanted to remodel their kitchen and master bathroom in order to increase the value of their home for when they sell it in a few years. This required a universal design that improved the current functionality. The OHi team delivered with a neutral color pallet, open concept layout, and an expansive shower.
The original bathroom and kitchen were characterized by their cramped, restrictive nature. In the kitchen, this was evident by the lacking storage, cumbersome soffits, and closed off floor plan. In the new design, our team removed the soffits, shifted the cabinets over to provide space for additional cabinets, and increased their height for an extra few inches of storage space. This, paired with the new open floor plan allowed for the whole area to feel more open and spacious.
In the bathroom, the original layout posed quite a problem with the tight shower space. Considering one of our clients is 6 feet tall, this needed to change in order to provide maximum comfort. With that in mind, our team adjusted the floor plan slightly by relocating the knee wall separating the toilet to allow for more space for a larger shower door. The new shower is taller, wider, and includes a luxurious bench.
Before: Closed off and lacking both storage and countertop space, the kitchen was dark and lackluster. The lighting was minimal, and the original pantry had no depth. It felt choppy, and blocked off from the living room.
After: After tearing down a wall, the new space feels open and bright. Increased lighting helps keep the space bright. The countertops have been replaced with a gorgeous, durable quartz. The fridge is relocated to allow for a new pantry space. As they were removing the drywall next to the fridge, they discovered the brick from the living room fireplace and decided to give the space an earthy rawness by leaving an accent wall of original, exposed brick.
Before: The cabinet double sink vanity is crafted from old, chipped wood, and topped with a dated countertop. All the accents in the bathroom were a shiny brass. The tub was extremely deep, and larger than necessary. The floor was covered in small square tiles. A single mirror hung over the vanity.
After: To give the bathroom a renewed sense of elegance, the floor is a marble-like tile. The tub deck is reduced, making the tub shallower, and therefore easier to get into. The vanity is replaced with a soft, cool gray wood, and topped with quarts. The mirror has been replaced by two tastefully smaller mirrors.
