These city-dwelling, empty nesters decided it was time to say goodbye to the skyscrapers and hello to the suburbs in order to be closer to their grandkids. They bought a ranch-style home in Northbrook with the intent of remodeling most of it. Hoping to match their existing furniture, style-wise, they requested a design that balanced mid-century modern and contemporary. As the main gathering place for their family, they also needed the space to be open enough for hosting holidays, with a high-functioning kitchen for cooking. Our team accomplished that through sleek cabinets, new wood floors throughout, updated bathroom vanity, and a refaced fireplace.
Looking for creative ways to expand potential seating while accentuating the mid-century modern aesthetic, they came up with the idea of crafting a live-edge wood table to act as an extension of the countertop rather than add to the island. This not only helps introduce a new texture while pulling in the warmth of other surrounding wood furniture pieces, but it also creates a duel-functioning furniture piece that can act as additional seating or a buffet while hosting. Crafted by American reclaim, the table consists of two slabs of walnut held together by resin. The resin is meant to be reminiscent of a river, adding to the earthiness of the space.
Before: The kitchen was closed off from the rest of the first floor and consisted of builder-grade white cabinets. The island only had space for the range and included an obtrusive ventilation hood in the middle of the room. Soffits prevented the cabinets from extending to the ceiling. The floor was a basic square tile. The appliances didn't match. Lighting was limited.
After: The walls were removed, creating an open layout. Hardwood runs throughout the first floor. Pantry cabinets are added, along with an 11-foot-long island. The island included ample cabinet storage. The wall cabinets extend to the ceiling as the soffits are removed. The lighting is layered, including recessed cans, task lighting, and pendants over the live edge wood table. The countertops are quartz. The range is located along the wall, with a new stainless steel hood that matches the finish of the other appliances.
