After winning OHi's Kindness to the Kindest Kitchen Makeover Giveaway these Arlington Heights homeowners worked with the OHi team to design their dream kitchen, by rearranging the appliances, increasing cabinetry, and including a must-have farmhouse sink.
While reconfiguring the kitchen, our team made the recommendation that the homeowners push their dining room into what was previously a second living room. This move would free up the space needed to increase their cabinetry and relocate the fridge.
While the homeowners loved the idea, they had one concern: they were worried that the space would feel too empty with just a dining room table. Their designer quickly supplied the idea of including a bar area and showed them an idea in their 3-D drawing that they instantly fell in love with. Once the design was completed, it became clear that the bar was the focal point of the room.
Before: The kitchen wall of cabinets was limited to the length of the wall. The cabinets were old wood with silver hardware. The Refrigerator was crammed into the corner and the countertops with laminate. The range was topped with a microwave for ventilation. There was no backsplash tile. The cabinets didn't extend to the ceiling.
After: The base cabinets are extended further allowing for an increase in both cabinets and countertop space. The refrigerator is relocated, allowing for the microwave to be moved into the base cabinets. A ventilation hood is stationed above the range. The subtle subway tile backsplash compliments the playful tile installed behind the range and creates a focal point for the room. The cabinets are extended to the ceiling.
Before: The first room of the house was originally set up as a secondary living room, complete with a couch, tv, and recliner. There was no additional light source. The walls were painted yellow. The basement door was a simple flat door.
After: The first room in the house now acts as the dining room. A warm brass five-light fixture is stationed above the dining room table. The basement door is updated to a more elegant design and the walls are painted soft gray.
Before: The galley kitchen is cramped with a stainless steel refrigerator jutting out. The sink is small, with a dated faucet. The countertops only run the length of the wall. An eat-in is stationed at the end of the room, along with awkwardly placed cabinets.
After: The refrigerator is relocated to the previous eat-in space and surrounded by pantry cabinets to expand storage availability. The sink is replaced with a large apron-front farmhouse sink. A ventilation hood is installed above the range. The laminate countertops are replaced with matte, cement-like quartz.
