For these Northbrook homeowners, the retro tile in their children's bathroom was a sign that they desperately needed an upgrade. They partnered with an OHi designer to create a fresh design with plenty of storage. The final product included environmentally conscious choices such as energy-efficient light fixtures and a dual flush toilet, alongside a fun pop of blue.
As a focal point of the room, the shower was designed to include everything from a dual showerhead, a playful accent tile reminiscent of denim, and brushed nickel details to offer a slight hint of glam. Most importantly, the new shower would include a niche to provide an organized storage solution for the space. Originally the shower niche was supposed to be centered in the shower. However, it was quickly discovered that it needed to be relocated due to the niche in the shower on the other side of the wall. With limited options, our designer opted to include a band of penny rounds that would help visually disguise, allowing it to be off-center without distracting from the integrity of the design.
Before: The original vanity was a dark, grainy wood with minimal drawers and cabinets space. There was a small opening between the two sinks. The countertops were a dated cream color. One long mirror extended the length of the vanity. The floor tile matched the retro, floral tile that lines the shower walls, making the space feel cramped and dark.
After: The space feels brighter due to a light gray floor tile and wall paint. The countertop is a blue-veined quartz surface to match the navy blue cabinets used for the vanity. Single handle brushed nickel faucets replaced the double handle faucets. A tower cabinet is installed to increase storage, along with additional drawers.
Before: The bathtub-shower combination was filled with a retro brown, floral tile that made the shower feel dark and heavy. The tub had a sliding glass door enclosure and a standard showerhead. There was no place to store toiletries, which led to the use of a detachable rack.
After: The glass door is removed and replaced with a shower curtain bar. The tile is now a classic white subway with a blue penny round accent tile. A niche is added to store toiletries to provide a cleaner, more functional look. A handheld double shower faucet is installed. Brushed nickel accents can be found throughout.
