After updating the rest of their home, these Arlington Heights clients knew it was time to tackle their 1960’s kitchen. They approached OHi in hopes of a design to seamlessly fit with the rest of their transitional-styled spaces, especially their latest home addition. Our team delivered with a Carrara marble backsplash, dark quartz countertops, and two-toned cabinets.
For these homeowners, their wishlist included creating a better workflow and increasing the storage. The workflow was improved by relocating the refrigerator and range. Additionally, instead of their originally long island, our designer thought to replace it with two smaller islands with room in between to help with movement. As for storage, our team added more cabinets, including pantry storage, and pullouts to help improve cabinet organization.
While this couple agreed on most things, the wife took the lead in many design decisions, except one: the finish on the cabinets. The wife wanted painted cabinets, while the husband dreamed of wood cabinets. In the end, they settled on a gray wood cabinet.
Before: The floor was linoleum. The cabinets were old brown wood. The appliances were dated, with the fridge and double oven along one wall, the range in the island, and the microwave above the countertop. The island was a long skinny piece in the middle of the room. There was no backsplash.
After: Two islands stand in the center of the room, including outlets. The range is relocated to the back wall, with a ventilation hood. The microwave and oven are moved to one of the islands. The island cabinets are gray wood, while the outer cabinets are a clean, white. A backsplash has been added.
Before: The Cabinets were a dark brown wood, paired with white laminate countertops. There wasn't a backsplash, instead, there was painted drywall. The sink was inlaid and small. The microwave was stationed above the dishwasher.
After: The cabinets are a clean, bright gray, paired with black hardware. The countertops are black quartz, which creates a welcome contrast with the cabinets and farmhouse sink. A marble tile is installed as the backsplash. The microwave has been relocated to the island, next to the oven.
