These Wheeling homeowners were in desperate need of a bathroom overhaul. A member of the household uses a wheelchair, and their previous space was completely inaccessible due to a small door frame, tub-shower combination, and a clunky sink vanity, making the use of the main bathroom a chore. Our team helped make the space wheelchair accessible by expanding the doorway, removing the bathtub, and replacing it with a large, curbless shower, including grip bars. We included a toilet at a more comfortable height, along with grip bars that lower and raise. The new bathroom is now perfect for anyone and everyone to use!
The main component of elevating this space involved creating places to hide the more mechanical elements of a basement, such as a furnace and water heater. By creating individual closets and rooms for each component, they could break the basement into unique spaces while also adding a bathroom. Our team relocated many of the elements to make the space more functional. However, they had to get creative when it came to the location of the furnace. Initially, the spot where it needed to be accessible was supposed to be a wall. The solution: include a 360-degree door that allows it to be easily reached.
Before: The floors were painted cement. The whole ceiling was composed of exposed beams. The walls were drab and uneven in color. There were no markings to delineate a new space.
After: Waterproof flooring in a lighter shade is installed throughout to help the space feel lighter when paired with the gentle gray paint on the wall. Crown molding lines the newly sealed ceiling.
