This Arlington Heights couple was tired of their pinkalacious bathroom and felt it was time to update it. The original space was wall-to-ceiling pink with a splash of mint and was a very tight fit for the husband, who uses a wheelchair. This client asked OHi to open the bathroom floor plan without moving walls. Our team replaced their door with a pocket door to create more space in the room for the wheelchair to fit, replaced the original walk-in shower with a curbless one, and even fitted a corner bench and handrails to make the space more accessible for the couple. We turned this 50's pink bathroom into a seamless contemporary space.
When choosing the style of the space our designer suggested a patterned tile for the main shower wall to draw people's attention as soon as they walk in. The client agreed and felt it was a fun and unique feature that made the space feel like an upscale hotel bathroom. Our designer mixed and matched the ceramic plank wood tile and half-hex ceramic white tiles to create a contemporary piece that flows seamlessly onto the floor.
Before: The space was tight and outdated. The floors were white tile, and the walk-in shower had a curb. The shower and vanity backsplash were pink tile. A large medicine cabinet took up half of the vanity wall. The vanity had a pink laminate countertop, and the sink base was mint.
After: The space has been expanded as the door is now a sliding pocket door. The floors have been updated to a maple wood tile. The vanity is now dark brown with a quartz remnant countertop and a white undermount sink with a brushed nickel faucet. The medicine cabinet has been replaced with a small square one. The vanity wall has been painted a light mint. The window wall has white subway tile that continues into the shower. There is now a curbless walk-in shower with a small corner bench. The shower tile is a mix of brown wood and white hexagon tiles. The space feels fresh and modern.
