GENERAL REMODEL

Splish Splash

The original master bathroom was compartmentalized with a wall separating the sink from the toilet and shower and a closet on the other end. The couple has retired and wanted a more accessible bathroom, including a shower bench. We opened the space by removing the wall and moving the toilet to the opposite side of the sink, which allowed the shower and vanity to be widened. To modernize the space, we traded dark oak wood and wallpaper for a brighter white and grey color scheme.

They also updated their hall bathroom, but primarily for aesthetic reasons. They wanted a space that felt welcoming to guests while matching the style of their refreshed kitchen and transformed master bathroom.

What Will Your Kitchen Cost to Remodel?

Find Out

The Kitchen

Before: The kitchen felt claustrophobic and segmented thanks to a laminate peninsula and floating oak cabinets; the lighting was limited and felt heavier, thanks to the dark wallpaper and deep brown of the oak cabinets. A half-wall was the only thing dividing the washer and dryer from the kitchen. There were limited cabinets, countertop space, and soffits, which prevented the cabinets from extending to full height.

After: An entire wall now divides the washer and dryer from the kitchen, helping keep things organized and cleaner dealing. The peninsula and floating cabinets are removed. Instead, the perimeter cabinets are extended along the wall thanks to removing the wall between the living room and dining room. A ventilation hood and range are added to this side of the room. The soffits are removed, and the cabinets extend higher. Quartz countertops are installed, along with fresh, white cabinets. An arabesque backsplash is also installed, giving the space a splash of elegance.

Master Bathroom

Before: The toilet and shower were separated from the sink with a door. This hotel-style setup made for the shower to feel tight and dark, with limited lighting. The vanity was cramped and consisted of oak cabinets and Corian countertops. The walls were lined with sailboat wallpaper.

After: The wall between the sink and shower is removed. The toilet is relocated to be on the other side of the bathroom. The vanity is much longer and includes ample storage and drawers for easy access of the storage. The faucet features two handles, and all traces of wallpaper are gone. The shower is extended and opened up, including a clear glass door, allowing more light to floor the space. The new shower is tiled and includes a niche for storage.

Hall Bathroom

Before: With a wooden toilet seat, tiny oak wood vanity, and dated bathtub shower combo, the hall bath felt cramped and dark. There was a square subway tile floor. The sink had a seashell basin and single-handle faucet. The mirror extended the entire wall.

After: Larger tiles line the floor and the wall of the updated bathtub-shower combination. A niche is added in the shower space for better storage and includes a decorative tile. The vanity is slightly larger, with white cabinets and improved storage. The new single-handle faucet is stainless steel and stands a bit higher to help minimize splashing while washing hands. The new mirror stands only above the vanity.
