Creating A Dark Kitchen Design That Works

Dark-Cabinets

When it comes to remodeling or building a new kitchen, perhaps the most important design aspect is the color scheme. The color scheme contributes significantly to the look and feel of a room. Wrapping up this decade, designers are all about dark kitchens: black, espresso, gray, and light brown cabinets, countertops, and backsplashes are everywhere. However, too much darkness can make a kitchen look crowded and depressing.

Whether doing a kitchen remodel or an entirely new build, it’s important for homeowners to keep a few things in mind when opting for a dark color scheme. Designer Andrea Shoop shares her thoughts in this week's post!

Dark Cabinets for Kitchen RemodelingBalance Light And Dark

For homeowners who just don’t like the idea of bright colors, lighter neutrals can add balance to dark cabinets or walls. A black-and-white combination is one of today’s most popular trends, lending an air of luxury to the room, but almost every dark shade will pair well with white. Other lighter colors, like pale floors or backsplashes, offer less of a stark contrast, but still balance darker hues.

Sneak In A Pop Of Color

While most people stick to neutrals, a pop of color makes a statement and gives dark kitchens an unexpected playfulness. Brightly painted walls, white countertops, and colored backsplashes complement dark cabinets well. Brightly colored small appliances and accessories offer a less-permanent way to incorporate color, providing a new look if they're switched out.

Let There Be Light

Without adequate lighting, a dark kitchen can feel cramped. Natural light is an easy way to counter this, even in kitchens composed of predominantly dark shades. Windows and skylights will offer plenty of natural light during the day, but dark kitchens also need enough lighting to look bright and uncluttered after sunset. A mixture of recessed lighting, task lighting under cabinets, and pendant lights or a statement chandelier will keep a dark kitchen warm and well lit any time of day.
