Originally, these clients only planned on remodeling their bathrooms to combine them into one space that could offer them the storage and space they desperately craved. They expanded their project to include the kitchen after seeing what the room would look like with the wall removed. The finished product significantly refreshes the home while greatly improving its functionality.
Collecting art has become a favorite pastime for this Arlington Heights couple. Early on in their relationship, they picked up a set of Jean Cocteau plates. When it came time to select materials for their kitchen, they saw a backsplash tile that reminded them of Cocteau's style and instantly knew that it needed to be their centerpiece. Our designer used the backsplash and the plates for inspiration as he created an artful kitchen with a timeless color palette and clean lines. The clients then had their plates professionally framed to be featured alongside the tile.
As for the bathroom, the homeowner had one request: make it feel like an upscale hotel. She desired a boutique feel that could become an oasis at the end of a long day. This was achieved by installing a black accented, gridded shower door that allowed for the natural light from the window to flood the space. Nature-inspired elements such as the wood of the cabinet and the green of the accent tile helped contribute to the feelings of relaxation and rejuvenation.
Before: The kitchen felt dark and cramped. The soffits prevented the old, grainy wood cabinets from going to the ceiling. The countertops were laminate. The appliances were dated. They had a plain white square subway tile backsplash.
After: The soffit is removed, and the upper white cabinets extend to the ceiling. The base cabinets are navy blue to help anchor the space and provide contrast. The appliances are updated. The countertops are a nice, bright white quartz to help lighten the space.
Before: A wall divided the kitchen from the dining room and living room. There was no island or peninsula. The flooring in the kitchen was different from the wood throughout the rest of the home.
After: The wall is removed, making the first floor feel open and cohesive. In its stead stands a peninsula, which offers seating, storage, and more countertop space. The openness allows for the first floor to feel bright and airy. The floor is now the same throughout, making the home feel seamless and expansive.
Before: The bathtub was lime green, along with the small sink countertop. The countertops' space was limited. The square white tile was starting to break off the wall. A curtain enclosed the shower. Lighting was minimal, and they were limited to a small rectangular mirror above the vanity.
After: A floating, double sink vanity is installed, providing more countertop space and storage. Two medicine cabinet mirrors with lighting are installed. Matte black, contemporary double-handle faucets stand proudly above the sink basin. The shower is now enclosed by a black gridded glass door, helping the light shine freely in the space. A shower niche is installed, along with a clean white subway tile accompanied by black grout, making it pop.
