REMODELING & ADDITIONS

City Condo Challenges

We've mentioned before how remodeling projects become a step more difficult when done in a condo. Not only does it usually limit the hours crew members are allowed to work, but there are a variety of things that have to get approval from the association. Furthermore, the major layout of things like plumbing are usually unchangeable, giving the designer the extra challenge of revamping the entire space while respecting the original plumbing layout.  These challenges are magnified in a city condo, due to tight spaces and lack of parking.

However, the OHi team has perfected their work with condos and has it down to a science. Our designer was still able to significantly alter the layout of the kitchen-living room area by adding and island. This island became the center for storage and cooking, as they were able to relocate the range. This also lead to the installation of a retractable downdraft stove vent.

A few things had to stay, such as the cement pillars. However, the team was able to design around those. The hardwood flooring also had to stay installed, which posed a problem as the client wanted new wood. The solution was to simply install the new floors directly over the old ones. Luckily not everything had to stay, and the client was able to get her wish of bathtub removal in favor of a larger, frameless shower.

I chose to work with OHi because they are a third generation, family-run business. Renovated my loft in the west loop, limited floor space and closets. My designer, Teri, provided excellent guidance on the best use of the space I had. Took me a while to pick my finishes and flooring, however Teri was patient yet consistent in her support. John and his entire team continue to make me feel part of the family!
