REMODELING & ADDITIONS

Reconfiguring a Puzzling Layout

While the focal point of this remodel is definitely the kitchen, without finding a new layout, many of the functional problems this family faced would still exist. Originally the laminate kitchen was attached to a family room, and separated from the dining room and living room by a narrow doorway. Our team made the simple suggestion to switch the dining room and family room so that at parties, or large meals, when the kitchen is crowded, guests can spill into the dining room while still keeping the cook company. The homeowners were then able to change the dining room into a music room that could also function as an extra seating area when they were entertaining. A closet removal between the kitchen and music room allowed for the kitchen to feel more connected to the music room and living room, though still separated. With a few sliding door removals and window placements, it helped clarify the entrance near the kitchen.

On the exterior of the house, we switched out the front door, and added a small deck to allow for possible seating or more space when entering the house. The deck also helped as a cosmetic solution to cover up the exhaust pipe.

“Our house is now a perfect place to live on a daily basis, as well as entertain. We could not be happier with the end result and will enthusiastically reach out to OHi for future projects. We recommend them, without reservation, to anyone who is looking for high-quality work.”

How Much Will Your Kitchen Cost to Remodel?

Find Out

The Kitchen

Before: With a late 90’s kitchen style, the laminate cabinets didn’t have the sleek elegance our clients desired. The island didn’t offer the counter space or storage desired, and the lighting fixture felt tasteless and dated. The appliances were old and ventilation was limited to that offered by the microwave, which wasn’t sufficient for the amount of cooking that took place.

After: The eye is almost immediately drawn to the tile accent wall, which adds a contemporary pop of fun. The island still offers seating, but is expanded to allow for more storage, microwave placement, and countertop space. All the appliances are updated, including a large oven. A custom hood is purchased to provide excellent ventilation. The new cabinets have a timeless feel.

The Living Room

Before: There is a sliding door exit and the hardwood floors were not to the taste of our clients

After: The sliding door is removed, and replaced by a wall. The floors are refinished to match the rest of the home.

The Music Room/Entryway

Before: This room functioned as the dining room, but also contained another front door entrance. The family rarely used it and found it frustrating when guest would accidentally approach that door instead. A closet makes the walkway to the kitchen feel tight and closed off. The floors were not to the taste of our clients.

After: Now a music room, the front door is removed and replaced with a back door in a less confusing location for visitors. The closet in the walkway to the kitchen is removed, creating a larger opening between the two spaces, creating a better flow for traffic. The floors are refinished to match the rest of the home.
