The charming village of Long Grove, nestled 29 miles NW of the Loop, boasts a rich history that dates back to the mid-19th century. The area's open prairie was already claimed by Yankee John Gridley before German immigrants discovered the area in the mid-1840s and made claims of their own deep in the grove. By 1847, a post office was established under the name Muttersholz, highlighting the area's strong German influence.
The Civil War and industrial opportunities in Chicago drained away most of Long Grove's Yankee families, leaving German as the most commonly spoken language. Despite nativist hostility towards German culture during World War I, the community persisted, reinventing itself as Long Grove once again. The cultural isolation of the small community deepened as major roads passed the still-rural country crossroad, but Long Grove found a new identity as a center for the growing antique trade.
This commerce drew developers' attention, who proposed major developments that threatened the village's historic character. In response, area property owners formed an association that countered with a village plat requiring a three-acre minimum lot size. Following litigation between developers and the association, a referendum incorporated the village of Long Grove in 1956.
Today, Long Grove continues to celebrate its unique history, offering charming shops, restaurants, and events that showcase the beauty and culture of this small but vibrant community.
