7 Things to Do on a Snow Day

Snow days are either a blessing or a curse, depending on how much your family enjoys being trapped in the house together. They can be dreadful because of the blocked driveways, empty store shelves, and the kids running amok through the house. Or snow days can be a relaxing break from routine where you can cuddle up with your loved ones and a cup of cocoa. If you're one of those who find joy in sudden winter weather wonderlands, then you know how revitalizing this unexpected day off can be. So, why not make the most of it and have good old-fashioned family fun?

Here are seven fun things you can do on a snow day inspired by the experiences of different OHi team members. These activities are not only fun but family-oriented, too. Whether you're a parent or a kid, there's something here for everyone.

Building a Snow Fort

Building a snow fort is an activity that is sure to make lasting memories. Gather some old buckets, spray them with cooking oil, tightly pack them with snow, and stack them to create walls. After that, use shovels or hands to carve out windows or doors. Once the walls are sturdy, make a snowball stockpile and defend your fort against the opposing team.

Indoor Treasure Hunt

Create a treasure map that leads to clues hidden around your house for your family to explore until they find the treasure. Choose a reward for finding the treasure, like a sweet treat, a new toy, or a fun activity. A treasure hunt can also be a good time for mom and dad to relax with a book you’ve meant to read while the kids play.

Play a Game

Board games are a classic form of family fun. Pull out some board games, puzzles, or cards, and start playing! Try something new like Tappel or opt for classic games such as Monopoly, Scrabble, Code Names, and Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza.

Do a DIY Project

Whether something big like finally putting together a shelving unit or small like creating a scrapbook, a snow day is the perfect day to do something hands-on that you keep putting off. According to our designers, a snow day is the perfect reason to pull out the glue gun and get crafting! Similarly, it provides a dedicated amount of time to tackle those bigger projects like painting a wall, fixing a loose hinge on a cabinet door, or assembling that chair you got for Christmas. But taking the time to use your hands while being productive will keep the nastiness at bay when you are stuck inside.

Have a Pajama Day

Who needs fancy clothes when you can lounge in pajamas all day? Declare it a Pajama Day, where everyone wears their favorite pajamas and is relaxed. You could read stories aloud, watch movies, and pig out on delicious snacks.

Create an In-Home Spa

Take a day to pamper and relax. Create a home spa day with face masks, manicures, and massages. You could create your spa ambiance by playing calming music and lighting candles.

Declutter and Clean

A snow day is the perfect opportunity to tackle those cleaning and decluttering tasks that have been piling up. Start with one room, and you'll see how quickly you can declutter and deep clean. Aside from creating a clean and organized space, decluttering can help you feel less stressed and more motivated.

Snow days don’t have to be boring and frustrating; they provide many opportunities to have fun with your family. We hope these tips inspire you to get creative and create memories that will last a lifetime. For more at-home tips, Sign up for our newsletter!
