History of Highland Park

Highland Park, located in Lake County, Illinois, is a charming suburban city 25 miles north of downtown Chicago. With a population of 30,176 according to the 2020 census, Highland Park is one of the many municipalities nestled along the picturesque North Shore of the Chicago metropolitan area.

Step back to 1833 when a traveler described visiting a village with bark-covered structures. Roasting corn with the chief, Nic-sa-mah, likely occurred south of present-day Clavey Road and east of the Edens Expressway.

Fast forward to 1847, when two German immigrants, John Hettinger and John Peterman, established St. John's. However, questions regarding land ownership led to the town's abandonment. A few years later, Jacob Clinton Bloom, another German immigrant, founded Port Clinton just south of St. John's. Port Clinton thrived, being described as one of the most promising villages in the city. Achievements included the establishment of a lighthouse, a pier, a sawmill, and a plank road. Surprisingly, Port Clinton lacked a train station in 1855, and by 1860, its growth came to a halt, leading to the shutdown of the lighthouse.

In 1867, Highland Park was purchased for $39,198.70 by ten forward-thinking men who became the original stockholders of the Highland Park Building Company. Thanks to the Chicago and Milwaukee Railroad, a depot was established, and in 1856, a plat extending south to Central Avenue was laid out. Highland Park, primarily consisting of scattered farms and undeveloped forested land, became a city on March 11, 1869. It evolved from the settlements of St. John and Port Clinton, with St. John's Avenue and Port Clinton Square serving as reminders of its history. The town owes its name to Walter S. Gurnee, who noted its parklike setting at an elevated position relative to the lake. In 1899, the village of Ravinia was annexed by Highland Park.

Historically, Highland Park experienced a period of prohibition from its establishment in 1869 until November 1, 1900, making it a "dry" community where the sale of alcoholic drinks was prohibited.

Discover the allure and rich history of Highland Park, where suburban living meets proximity to the vibrant city of Chicago.
