History of Evanston

Founded in 1857 by Methodist business leaders, Evanston was officially incorporated in 1863. This vibrant city is not only home to the prestigious Northwestern University, established in 1851, but also showcases a rich tapestry of cultural diversity. Shaped by the influences of nearby Chicago and the university itself, Evanston holds a deep-rooted and historically complex relationship with Northwestern. Prior to the 1830s, the area was largely uninhabited, characterized by wetlands and swampy forests. However, Potawatomi Native Americans utilized trails traversing the region, leaving traces of their semi-permanent settlements along the way.

The French explorers originally named the area "Grosse Pointe," referring to a point of land extending into Lake Michigan, located approximately 13 miles north of the Chicago River. In 1836, non-Native Americans began settling in the region, giving rise to names like "Grosse Point Territory" and "Gross Point voting district" during the 1830s and 1840s, although the boundaries of the area remained undefined. Despite limited settlement, some farming and lumber activities took place on the higher ground, alongside several taverns or "hotels" along the ridge roads. However, the lake steadily eroded Grosse Pointe during this period.

In 1850, Ridgeville, a township stretching from Graceland Cemetery in Chicago to the southern edge of the Ouilmette Reservation, was established. This township, as shown in the 1850 census, housed a few hundred settlers and even had a post office named Ridgeville located in one of the taverns. Nonetheless, a formal municipality had yet to be established.

Fast forward to 1851 when a group of Methodist business leaders founded Northwestern University and Garrett Biblical Institute. Facing challenges in finding available land along the north shore towards Lake Forest, the committee was considering purchasing farmland west of the city until Orrington Lunt insisted on one final visit to the area where Evanston stands today. The Northwestern founders secured a bluffed and wooded site by the lake, acquiring several hundred acres from John Foster, a Chicago farm owner. In 1854, they presented their city plans to the county judge, proposing to name it Evanston in honor of John Evans.
