After deciding to move to Arlington Heights, this out-of-state couple wanted their dream home to be picture perfect prior to move-in day. They turned to the experts and asked OHi to help make their home dreams come true. Not only did we help create a new look for the space, but we were able to reshape the layout of the home to make it friendlier to their lifestyle by increasing the size of the kitchen, expanding the closets, and transforming the fifth bedroom into a luxurious master bathroom.
The original floorplan consisted of a claustrophobic, shoe-box kitchen with limited countertops space and storage. For a growing family, this simply wasn’t an option. Ultimately, the homeowners decided to remove the wall separating the kitchen from the formal living room and transformed the whole right side of the first floor into an expansive kitchen. The formal living room was replaced with an eat-in area next to the original picture window. The removal of the wall not only allowed for more natural sunlight from the window, but created enough space for an impressive island, complete with additional storage, seating, and the kitchen sink.
The other dramatic change came in the creation of a master bathroom. Originally, there were only two bathrooms, both of which received a facelift. Yet, these homeowners dreamed of having a luxurious master suite, including a bathroom. The solution was to commandeer the bedroom next door. For the bathroom, the homeowners decided they didn't need a bathtub, a decision becoming more common for younger families. Overall, they wanted the space to feel bright, sleek, and open, all achieved with the neutral color pallet, frameless shower, and white vanity.
Before: Originally the kitchen was confined to a meager square of space. The appliances were dated, the cabinets were old wood, paired with beige countertops that weighed the space down. The lighting was limited to a single fluorescent light. The only cooking ventilation was the microwave above the stove.
After: A wall was removed, allowing for the kitchen to expand the length of the house. The original location includes a pantry for additional storage, along with the numerous cabinets. The appliances are updated and gleam with a stainless steel finish. A ventilation hood is installed above the stove. All countertops are quartz. Canned lights are added throughout, along with three handing light pendants for style.
Before: A wall divides the kitchen from a formal living room. The living boasted of a gorgeous picture window but was overshadowed by the atrocious wood-paneled walls. The kitchen had wood floors, while the living room had carpet.
After: The wall between the kitchen and living room is removed, and the kitchen is expanded along the length of the house. While the formal dining is removed from a different location in the home, an eat-in space is designated with a chandelier next to the picture window, which has been reframed. An expansive island extends throughout the kitchen, creating more countertop space, along with seating. The flooring is now a rich-toned hardwood that is matched throughout the house.
Before: Originally, there are dividing half walls between the formal dining room and living room. The flooring is carpet. There were no overhead lights in the living room, and there was a chandelier to mark the dining room. The window was framed in dated oak.
After: The half walls are removed, and the flooring is replaced to match the floors of the kitchen, giving the entire first floor an open, seamless feel. The window is reframed with white trim. Canned lights are installed, providing optimal lighting.
Before: The vanity was a clunky and dated oak appendage. The walls were a dull beige that matched the creamy countertop. The sink was paired with a temperamental single-handle faucet.
After: An elegant pedestal sink proudly stands with a double-handle faucet, with smooth curves. The framing around the window is replaced, with a clean, stark white finish. The walls are painted a soft gray, helping to brighten the room. The same mirror from the master bathroom is hung above the vanity, giving the home cohesive seamlessness.
