These welcoming and warm Prospect Heights clients loved hosting but didn't have enough space in their home to store all of their belongings or entertain as many people as they wanted, so they called OHi to open up their floor plan, update the powder room, and add a mudroom dropoff zone. By opening the kitchen walls and absorbing the original dining space, our team created a warm and earthy hosting paradise with storage space to spare.
In order to open the first floor up, our team had to absorb the dining room into the kitchen, which meant our designer had to be intentional in creating an eating area that was fluid with the space. This led to the island banquette that the kitchen now evolves around. It has extended barstool seating that can be pulled out to accommodate more people and lots of storage as the gathering spot is all drawers.
We created a mudroom by their side door by removing the original closet and building in a drop-off zone complete with coat hooks and a bench. We also stacked the washer and dryer to make space for a counter and cabinet unit.
Before: A closed-off living hallway with brown and white stairs and colored tile flooring, two white French doors are closing off the living room and a small doorway into the kitchen family room.
After: The wall separating the kitchen and living room is removed as well as the French doors. The flooring throughout the space and on the stairs has been replaced with a deep brown hardwood. The peninsula is removed, and there is an extended light-green island
Before: There is a window with a white curtain header and brown wood trim on the side wall. There is brown wood paneling along the bottom half of the wall and green paint on the top half, with shelves and a towel rack above the toilet. There is a white porcelain sink next to the toilet.
After: The main back wall now has a floor-to-ceiling metallic tile backsplash. The color scheme throughout the room is a modern grey and blue. The window trim is now white with full-length pull-down shades. There is a floating vanity with a black faucet.
