History of Inverness

The Inverness area, initially settled in 1836 by George Ela and referred to as Deer Grove, has a rich history. Other settlers joined in the following years, shaping the township. In 1840, the US Government offered affordable land at $1.25 per acre, helping settlers become property owners thanks to loans from the more affluent Thomas Bradwell. By 1854, rail service connected Deer Grove to Chicago, making the area easily accessible.

Fast forward to 1926, when Arthur T. McIntosh acquired significant parcels of land, including the Cudahy Company Golf Course, for development. Named after his Scottish clan home, McIntosh envisioned Inverness as a distinctive community for young families seeking a country-like atmosphere. Way Thompson played a crucial role in preserving the natural beauty of the area by designing the road system and arranging lots to complement the rolling terrain. With the first homes occupying the area by 1939, Inverness offered affordability and charm, with house plans even decorated by Thompson's wife, Barbara. While McIntosh built the initial 20 homes, later residences were custom-built on purchased lots.

Today, Inverness continues to captivate with its unique charm, scenic landscapes, and a rich heritage that echoes through its architecture and community spirit.
