After a long winter, spring has finally sprung in Chicagoland, and home improvement season is upon us! Before you tackle a remodeling project, do your due diligence on both the products and the company you’re interested in working with to avoid costly mistakes later on. We caught up with one of OHi's Product Managers, Ben Bailey, and got his thoughts on what you should consider and research prior to jumping into a remodeling project.
Product Wishlist - Design & Function
Research the best products that will meet your needs for BOTH function and design. In addition to getting ideas of the styles and color combinations you like, take time to consider the functions your space currently lacks. When we're working on installations, it's always great to see space that's been repurposed for function alongside details that make it beautiful.
The best thing for you to do as you prepare for a remodel is to make a wishlist of all your desires, considering aspects of both design and function. Categorize the items on your list by ranking what you like, what you need, and what would be "nice" to have. Using tiers makes it clear to see what the most important elements are to you and will aid in decision making when putting together a timeline and budget with the remodeling company you choose.
Get To Know The Locals
In addition to product research, you should look into the companies you’re considering to work with. You will want to work with a company who is knowledgeable, trustworthy, and a true partner throughout the process. It is important that they carefully listen to your wants and needs, address your concerns, and are genuinely excited to help you achieve your design goal.
To ensure you find the best partner, choose a home remodeler who is a member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), a nonprofit organization with strict standards of practice and a code of ethics for all members.
Furthermore, you’ll want to work with a company who has been in business for a long time. A business that sustained pre-social media means that its client base is built on referrals and reputation. Subsequently, social media has become a useful tool in finding the right partner as well. The most popular platform in the design and remodeling community is Houzz.com as it brings homeowners and certified industry professionals together in one place. On Houzz, you can find local professionals and chat directly with them, get inspiration from viewing their past projects, and see detailed customer reviews. Talking to multiple companies is not a bad idea. Just be sure to choose the fit that's best for you, both in personality, and in trust factor.
