History of Elmhurst

The Elmhurst area was initially settled by members of the Potawatomi Native American people, followed by European-American immigrants in the mid-1800s. Elmhurst, formerly Cottage Hill, experienced significant growth with the construction of the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, providing farmers more accessible access to Chicago. The village was incorporated in 1882, and Elmhurst University was established in 1871. Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, the first hospital in DuPage County, was founded in 1926. The community holds annual events such as the Memorial Parade and St. Patrick's Day Parade, the third largest in the Chicago area.
