This Prospect Heights client dreamed of having an island in their kitchen. After many contractors told them their dream was impossible, they finally found OHi, who was able to make their dreams come true. Our team took this standard, sterile, and dim kitchen and turned it into a traditionally modern masterpiece. We removed the peninsula and added a T-shaped island with extra seating, hung pendant lights and put in recessed cans to make the space brighter, replaced the beige granite countertops with white quartz, added a range hood, black hardware, and a cream glass subway tile backsplash.
Before signing on with OHI, this client had talked to several other contractors who told her that an island would never work in her kitchen. Still, our designer boldly accepted and completed the "impossible" mission. Our designer made this client's request happen with unique plumbing work to move the sink from the original peninsula to the center of the new island and remove the seating area by the window. To make up for the loss of seating she decided to add an extension to the island, making it a T-shape with an hourglass table base to support the extension and as an added touch of craftsmanship. The extension now acts as a seating area for the couple to enjoy their morning coffee together, and there is plenty of storage on the main base.
Before: There was a peninsula separating the kitchen prep area from the eating area. The sink was housed on the peninsula. There were stock-grade bright white cabinets and a light beige granite countertop. The appliances were stainless steel and black. The hardware was standard steel. The only light in the room was a fan light fixture in the center of the space.
After: The peninsula is removed, and there is now a T-shaped island in the center of the space with a seating area supported by an hourglass table base on the end. The cabinet's perimeter cabinets were replaced with Sorrento American white, and the island is a charcoal gray. The microwave is moved from above the range to a drawer microwave in the base cabinets. The hardware is replaced with matte black. There is now a white range hood above the oven. There are now five hanging pendant lights above the island and recessed can lighting throughout.
