Originally designed by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, preserving the character of the house in the hall bath redesign was a top priority for these Bensenville clients. Nervous that they’d be presented with an overly contemporary design, they tasked OHi with improving the function and elevating the space with new materials all while maintaining the original charm so that the space remained cohesive. The result is flawless.
One of the most frustrating aspects of the original bathroom was the 3’x3’ shower that hadn’t been updated since the home was built in 1948. Apart from that, the layout made the space feel tighter than it was. The floors were uneven, and while the avocado tile had a unique, pottery look, it slightly overwhelmed the room since it covered every surface. However, our team expanded the space for the shower, and used a large format, white subway tile on the walls, helping to brighten the space and make it feel larger. The also update the shower door to be a complete glass wall shower door, helping with the allusion that the space was bigger than it was.
Then came the shower niche. A detail the clients strongly desired. The only issue was that the shower wall was shared with a wood closet wall that didn’t offer the appropriate space for a niche. Luckily, our crew put their heads together and adjusted a few measurements to create the space. Now the niche steals the show as a strong focal point.
Before: Originally covered in an Avocado tile from floor to ceiling, the space felt slightly dark and heavy. The vanity was a grainy wood, the angled sink had a standard, dated faucet. A bulky medicine cabinet protrudes from the wall, topped with a fluorescent panel light. The flooring was uneven and couldn’t be completely replaced since radiant heating pipes connected throughout the entire house were cemented in.
After: The tile is replaced with dry wall and a perfect tile that looks like hardwood, which helps pull the entire space together. The sink is replaced, accompanied by a sleek, angular faucet. Solid surface is used for the countertop, allowing for reduced seams and a sleeker transition from countertop to sink bowl. A clean, slab-faced vanity is installed creating a contemporary, mid century modern look. A new, decorative lighting fixture is perched above the updated medicine cabinet. The team installed luxury vinyl tile over the original flooring to give it a more contemporary, even look.
