REMODELING & ADDITIONS

Overcoming Unexpected Surprises

With our Arlington Heights clients’ passion for cooking and entertaining, transforming their narrow galley kitchen into a spacious room for hosting was a top priority. Over the course of several design meetings, we agreed on the structural modifications needed to enlarge the kitchen and add countertop space, including removing walls and relocating a powder room. However, when construction got underway, we discovered a previously -built second floor addition was incorrectly supported by the building crew. Given that safety is our most important consideration on any job, we installed the appropriate beams, including an additional support post. Our team added soffits throughout the entire living room to mask these unexpected features, limiting their impact on the space’s design.

“OHi did an amazing transformation of my kitchen, family room and dining room. Teri, the designer, helped with all the details from start to finish. I couldn’t believe all the choices they have to choose from. It’s a one- stop shop with professional work from every tradesman that entered my home. I will use OHi again for my next project.”

What Will Your Kitchen Cost to Remodel?

Find Out

The Kitchen

Before: Tile flooring, coffered ceilings, classic ’90s wood cabinets—the design details overwhelmed the narrow galley kitchen. Plus, the limited granite countertops didn’t offer nearly enough room for the master-chef residents.

After: Starting from scratch, our team made the tiny galley into an entertainer’s dream. Newer, lighter, Decora inset cabinets are the base of the design and include several storage secrets tucked behind their clean finish. A white ceramic subway tile backsplash, with a glazed porcelain hexagon portion behind the stove, adds beautiful dimension and interest. A custom hood from Vent-A-Hood, a white double bowl farmhouse sink, and a Hansgrohe Steel Optik faucet add both functionality and beauty to this chef’s kitchen. The Cambria quartz countertops cover the expanse of our clients’ desired counter space, including their two massive islands.

Dining Room to Wet Bar

Before: The clients’ secluded, formal dining room didn’t get enough use to justify its existence.

After: We removed the walls, relocated the powder room, and made a wet bar at our clients’ request. This meets their needs for flow, and provides a beautiful, convenient area for their barware and wine. Decora inset cabinets and Cambria countertops complement the materials used in the kitchen. The Golden Honey Pencil Stone from the fireplace serves as the wet bar backsplash, tying the design together from one side of the house to the other. A granite bowl sink, featuring a Franke Satin Nickel faucet, provides further functionality to the wet bar.

The Living Room

Before: Filled with dated wood paneling and separated from both the dining room and kitchen, the existing living room did not create an ideal environment for hosting family and friends.

After: Raw four-inch oak planks, sanded and stained to the clients’ exact design selection, replace the dated floors throughout the main level while a Golden Honey Pencil Stacked Stone fireplace replaces the boring brick. Updated lighting and Pella windows and doors provide both beautiful and energy-efficient touches to the walls and ceilings.

The Laundry Room

Before: The powder room had dated cabinetry and an awkward location for the washer and dryer. The 90's design with wood accents made for a dated look

After: We polished up the laundry room and continued the new hardwood floors into the space for a seamless transition. The beautiful new grey cabinetry provides storage and clean lines with a Kohler  faucet. The white subway tile backsplash gives a clean, modern finish to the space.
