## What's A Bump Out?

While definitions vary, most experts classify bump outs as "micro-additions" that expand the square footage of an existing room by as little as two feet or as much as 15 feet. They offer cost savings over a full addition because they typically don't require extra HVAC, an extension of the roof, or additional joists. In many cases, this type of addition doesn't impact the home's foundation.

## When Does It Make Sense?

The success of a bump out largely depends on the size and configuration of the existing house. Homeowners can look for bump out opportunities in small rooms that would be substantially impacted by even a small square footage increase. That tiny 100-square-foot kitchen? Adding a 5 by 10 bump out would create a 50 percent space increase, which is significant when it comes to a remodel.

## The Best Ways To Use The Extra Space

Innovative ideas for a bump out addition can really add to a home's functionality. Some of the most popular options include the following:

- Window seat with shelving in a living room
- Soaking tub in an existing bathroom
