Elmhurst is a quaint and picturesque city located in Chicagoland. Elmhurst has a long and interesting history that dates back to the early 1800s. Elmhurst was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, which included the Potawatomi, Fox, and Mascouten people. In 1833, the first settler of Elmhurst was Daniel Stuckart who bought property from another settler named Richard Hammers. That same year, Elmhurst received its name after John A. Sparks purchased an 80-acre tract of land for $1 an acre and named it Elm Hurst—a tribute to the many elm trees found in the area.
By 1881 Elmhurst had grown enough to be incorporated as a village with a population of 300, with Elmhurst College being founded two years later. Elmhurst grew steadily throughout the 20th century with more businesses setting up shop, new homes being built, and streets becoming paved. The 1950s saw Elmhurst expand even further with new developments such as Elizabeth Roberts Park and Wilder Park providing recreational activities for residents of all ages. The 1960s saw Elmhurst become part of Chicagoland's rapid expansion with many new stores, restaurants and office buildings opening up downtown which provided even more job opportunities for residents.
Today Elmhurst is home to over 44,000 people and boasts one of the most vibrant downtown districts in Chicagoland. From annual events like Festive Fling or Summer Sunset Concert Series to Elmfest on York Street there is always something fun happening in Elmhurst no matter what time of year it is! With numerous parks & playgrounds including Wilder Park Conservatory & Lizzie’s Woods Nature Preserve there are plenty of outdoor activities for everyone to enjoy as well!
